Head lice can be picked up at daycare, school, summer camp, bible camp or even if your children's friends come for a sleepover and they are infected. While lice are extremely irritating and annoying, there are many different treatments to get rid of them. Mayonnaise or Petroleum Jelly – Many people have used these products with great success. The purpose of using these is to smother the lice. Because of the thick coating you get in your hair with mayonnaise or petroleum jelly, the head lice are smothered and are unable to get air. After a long period of time, usually overnight, the lice have suffocated and are dead. Then, you will rinse out the hair and then go through the hair with a fine-tooth comb. This removes the dead head lice and the eggs.

Essential Oils – Many essential oils are natural insecticides and repellents. Use eucalyptus oil, anise oil, ylang ylang oil, geranium oil, or citronella oil. Place several drops of one or more of these oils into a fourth or half cup of olive oil. This dilutes the essential oils so the potency does not irritate the scalp. Saturate the entire head with the oils and allow it to sit for 30 minutes to an hour. If possible, place a shower cap on the head and allow the infected person to leave the oil on overnight. Then, use a fine-tooth comb to go through the hair and remove the dead head lice and eggs.

Combing Method – Rather than using a product, it is possible to simply get rid of head lice by combing them or picking them out. This is a great way to treat head lice for small children who may be oversensitive to chemicals in medicated shampoos. You will need to apply some conditioner in order to help the comb slide through all of the hair. Remove all the lice that you find as well as the eggs. You will have to do this several times in order to get the newly hatched lice. Also, you will need to treat bedding, hair accessories, scarves, and anything else that may have come into contact with the head lice. You will need to do this no matter what sort of treatment you use.

You can simply throw washable items into the washer and run them through with hot water. Then, dry them at the hottest setting for 30 minutes to an hour. For items that cannot be washed, send them to the dry cleaner. Purchase new hairbrushes, combs and hair accessories. If you don't want to throw away the old ones and purchase new ones, allow them to soak in boiling hot water for an hour. Then wash them with soap and hot water.
